The PUC men's basketball team defeated Calumet St. Joseph, 78-74, putting them in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. In their first conference road win of the season, the Peregrines shot 48.5 percent from the field compared to 39.7 percent by the Crimson Wave.
Aaron Evans scored the opening basket of the game, but would only have five points in the first half. The two teams were active in the first half which saw seven lead changes. Junior forward Neil Hudson's shot left PUC trailing by only one at halftime, 34-33.
The Peregrines struggled at the start of the second half and allowed CCSJ to go on a 9-0 run and build a 10 point lead. PUC turned things around in the final 16 minutes of play, shooting 68 percent from the field while holding CCSJ to only 25.9 percent.
With 8:31 left in the game, Evans layup would give PUC their first lead since 11:36 of the first half. PUC was able to keep a lead until less than three minutes were left in the game when the two teams began trading baskets.
CCSJ's junior guard Wilfredo Escobar would scored five straight points to put CCSJ ahead 66-65 with 3:21 left in the game, but they would not keep it for long. The Peregrines would take back the lead and hold onto it for the remaining 2:42 of the game.
For the first time this season, PUC had six players in double figures including freshman Brant Stockamp who led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Neal Hudson finished with eight rebounds as well to go with his 14 points and freshman Jordan Champion added 13 points of his own.
The other four individuals with double figures were freshman Kedric Williams with 12 points, freshman Aaron Evans with 11 points and freshman Mark Sutter with 10.
