Ali Vincent just barely beat the clock in the race to achieve the perfect bikini body for the season. The thirty-three-year-old hairstylist from Arizona became the first female to win "The Biggest Loser," after losing 112 pounds.

Ariel: is it time to jump ship?

The Lawrentian, Lawrence University, WI

12 hours ago by Maureen Darras

Contrary to what the piles of yearbooks in cabinets and under coffee tables in the union would suggest, Ariel, Lawrence University's yearbook, has a history of publication that spans back farther than the 1970s.

No conclusive evidence has been found (albeit, I haven't looked very hard -- the last time I rummaged around in the junk heaps of LU history I found a picture of what Sage looked like before the construction and was miserable for the rest of the day), yet records suggest this yearbook has been around for at least a century.

The Lawrence Bubble

The Lawrentian, Lawrence University, WI

1 day ago by Nora Taylor

The Lawrence bubble is a phenomenon most Lawrentians past and present are familiar with. Recently there seems to be another sort of Lawrentian bubble.

Not to bite the hand that is feeding me, but I must say that the Op-Ed page is getting very self-referential these days.

Hate speech is slippery slope

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

2 days ago by Olga Malkiman, Sophomore in Business

I am appalled the DI views the decision to keep Timothy Brumleve's programming on air as a victory for freedom of speech.

While educated citizens may see past his slander and know to change the channel, they are not the concern. The concern is people ignorant of Jewish heritage who can be misled and persuaded by anti-Semitic messages.

STOKES: Finally beating up the bully

Stokes' final musings as a graduating senior on being a student of color at Marquette.

When will we be satisfied?

Spring Arbor University Crusader, Spring Arbor University, MI

America's 2008 presidential elections have always had clear front-runners. This year is something totally different. The Republican Party battled it out with Senator John McCain becoming the victor for his party. For a while I thought both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee had a chance but I guess America was clear who it wanted to run for the Republican Party.

George W. Bush - erectile-ly dysfunct

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

3 days ago by Matt Chiaramonte

This is an article about my penis; my dong, my member, my frank and beans. Because of censorship and not to upset too many readers, I will refer to my penis by its nickname for the rest of this article. That nickname is President George.

George first came into power about eight years ago.

Once again, our ode to final exams week

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

3 days ago by The Daily Illini Editorial Board

And it came to pass.

Early in the morning toward the last

day of the semester,

There arose a great multitude smiting the books and wailing.

And there was much weeping and

Gnashing of teeth,

For the day of judgement was at hand

And they were sore afraid, for they

had left undone

Those things which they ought not to have done,

And there was no help for it.

Students should be allowed guns

The recent school shootings across the country have brought about many questions about school security. If the students cannot be protected by the university, do they have the right to protect themselves?

Tears, Jeers and Cheers

The DePauw, Depauw University, IN

At the end of each year, the editorial staff examines all our issues for the topics and controversies that dominated our headlines. We've seen a last-second Monon win, the loss of a favorite Mexican restaurant, three tragic deaths of members of the DePauw community and the announcement of our next president.

The only thing more satisfying in life than bearing witness to one's success is to watch them ultimately crash and burn. That's precisely why we have "American Idol," the only current TV show that receives equal attention on both sides of the talent fence. It's far more entertaining to see contestants verbally stoned by rapid-firing judges than it is to share in the fairytale ending of the champion.

Reflecting on four years at DePauw

The DePauw, Depauw University, IN

4 days ago by Robin Lamkin

One of the perks of knowing that I'm graduating in 12 days (not that I'm counting) is that I now feel like I can be completely honest about my experiences at DePauw. I haven't always spoken up, even when I wanted to. I always felt I wasn't qualified to speak my mind on certain subjects.

Ripped off

Michigan Daily, University of Michigan, Mi

Thanks to the aggressive legal tactics of the Recording Industry Association of America, in addition to worrying about finals, some college students over the past to weeks have also had to worry about their criminal records. Campuses across the nation saw huge spikes in subpoenas delivered by the organization, including here at the University.

Nothing to apologize for

Chicago Flame, University of Illinois, IL

5 days ago by Gregory Pratt

One of my favorite albums is Kimya Dawson's "I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean." It is worth listening to because it is good music but also because it is an honest and occasionally cheeky discourse on human existence. Dawson isn't actually sorry that sometimes she's mean.

A Day in the Life: Taking notes

The Lawrentian, Lawrence University, WI

5 days ago by Jessica Vogt

8:29 a.m.: You arrive in class and begin to get ready to hear the latest lecture on determinism and free will, 18th century Spanish literature, or whatever. What do you get out to take notes on? (a) a PC laptop, (b) an Apple MacBook, (c) a spiral notebook you just bought at Conkey's yesterday, (d) a notebook you used last term for Freshman Studies and has blank pages left, or (e) some paper only used on one side that you just nicked from the recycle bin.

Amending admissions

Michigan Daily, University of Michigan, Mi

5 days ago by Daily Editorial Staff

If state representative Rick Jones has his way, getting into the University is about to become a lot simpler - if you're an in-state student at the top of your class. Jones, a Republican from Grand Ledge, has proposed a plan that would grant Michigan high school students graduating in the top 10 percent of their class automatic admission to any of the state's 15 public universities.

An open mind is essential to education

BG News, Bowling Green State University, OH

5 days ago by Brian Kutzley

"BG and You," our newest ad campaign. While I tend to think it's a modest improvement over "Dream B!G" I also suspect that most students find it corny at best. But I'm going to pretend that it speaks to a powerful truth: personal choice in education.

As I have tended to point out, this University hosts some groundbreaking progressive material.

How to cope with the world hunger crisis

BG News, Bowling Green State University, OH

5 days ago by Mwendah M'mailutha

It's no longer a remote or academic issue; the world - developed, transition or developing - is facing a food crisis. Over the last two months, the world has witnessed food riots in more than a dozen countries.

In Haiti, food riots went on for a week and culminated in the death of a soldier and the ouster of a government.

Snowballs in Hell: fallacies of the global warming debate

Chicago Flame, University of Illinois, IL

5 days ago by Christopher Skeet

Regular readers of the Chicago Flame probably know by now that I'm politically conservative and, as such, there are certain stereotypes designated to me by the urban university mindset. I've long since given up trying to hide the glaring fact that I spend my moonshine-induced evenings engaging in sexual intercourse with toothless family members, while contemplating the sadistic joy I'd wallow in from reading (if only I were literate) Fox News articles on death toll predictions for the next Bushitler crusade against oil-owning non-Christians.

A personality that won't work in retail

Michigan Daily, University of Michigan, Mi

5 days ago by Harun Buljina

Rejection hurts, even when it comes at the hands of a major retail store. A few months ago, Borders seemed like the perfect solution to my unemployment woes. The chain had opened a new location just two miles from my home, and a quick phone call revealed it was still hiring.

You didn't play Frisbee on the Quad?

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

Graduation is the first day of the rest of your life, by which I mean "Ha ha, you have to be an adult now." Not that I would know. I got my Political Science degree in 2006 but began law school that fall, so I've staved off adulthood at least until I get my Juris Doctor in 2009, and possibly until after medical school and barber college.

Truth be told: the last time is the first time

The DePauw, Depauw University, IN

I don't have much left to say. That may seem strange to some of you, as I typically treat my attempts at clear expression like a child's game of darts: try enough times and you're bound to hit a bull's-eye eventually. Perhaps my dad expressed it best when he told me at six years old that my speech consisted of "just spitting out words to see where they'll land.

Changes we'd like to see happen next year

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

Finals start today, and many of us have already checked our brains out and are anticipating nearly four months of vacation or the steady paycheck that comes with a new job.

As we look ahead to next school year, here are some goals that we hope get accomplished during the 2008-09 school year.
