Hawaiian Punch pulled off an upset over A Taint Away in the intramural volleyball championship Thursday in the REC center gym. Hawaiian Punch swept the match 22-20 and 21-19.
Both teams defeated the higher seeds during the finals earlier in the night and were ready for action.
A "let's go, let's go" chant could be heard from both sides of the net.
A Taint Away took a large lead early in the first game. However, Hawaiian Punch didn't give up and came back to win it. The loss hurt A Taint Away and they were unable to hang on to an early lead in the second game.
"We've improved since the beginning of the year. We played hard, we stuck in it and we played as a team. That's what helped us win tonight," said Shari Warren, a freshman majoring in pre-optometry and Hawaiian Punch team member.
Hawaiian Punch was at a disadvantage for the night after a few players left early in the game. This gave an even bigger advantage to A Taint Away, who finished the regular season with a better record than Hawaiian Punch.
"I'm thankful to my team and all the others as well, it was a great season," said Warren.
Before the championship was held, the north and south division finals took place.
A Taint Away defeated the overall number one seeded Bad News Bears. After losing the first game, 21-17, they came back to win the next two 21-19 and 21-17 in the North Division.
Hawaiian Punch took the South Division crown by sweeping the Eagles 21-16 and 21-15.
"The league went great," said Intramural Sports Coordinator Matt Dudzik. "It was good to see a new team win."
Plans are already underway for the next season of intramural volleyball. The new season will begin in February.
