Eight of the 13 active Peregrines are listed as academically ineligible to play after fall semester grades were released. Head Coach Mike James and his entire coaching staff have turned in their resignations, effective immediate
"[Coach] James felt a lot of this was his fault," said Sports Information Coordinator Dave Fanno. "In a situation like this, someone has to be the fall guy."
According to the NAIA rules, the remaining scheduled games will be designated "no contest" and cannot be counted as forfeit victories by scheduled opponents. Therefore, the Peregrines finished the season with an 8-5 record, and it will be recorded as so in the archive files for the future.
The remaining men's schedule consisted of 16 total games, including 12 dates and a post season tournament in what would be the teams last year within Division I of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. It was recently announced that both the men's and women's basketball teams are moving down to Division II of the conference for the 2007-2008 season.
According to Rob Jensen, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health, Recreation and Sports, an assessment of the men's basketball program will be conducted and improvements will be made prior to resuming play next season. However, no agenda has been set for hiring a new coaching staff.
This is the first premature termination of a basketball season at PUC since the 1994-95 campaign, when the women's basketball season was canceled due to injuries, ailments, academic ineligibility and unexpected departures.
