Late in the second half of Tuesday night's game, senior guard Marcus Ford fouled out. After taking the bench, an upset Ford had a loud exchange of words with Peregrine Head Coach Mike James, leading Ford to be taken out of the gym by junior forward Lawrence Sandlin and Assistant Coach Drew Fountain.
"It was just frustration," said Ford about the incident.
The Peregrines men's basketball team picked up their sixth win of the season with an 81-77 victory over the Purdue North Central Panthers.
PNC was no walk in the park, though.
"This is the best PNC has been in a while," said Fountain.
Senior forward Minuyard Wheeler came out huge for the Peregrines, leading all scorers with 25 total points and 16 in the second half. Wheeler helped the Peregrines secure victory with a deep 3-point shot in the final minute to put the Peregrines up for good.
"I took the shot because I was open," said Wheeler. "I wouldn't normally take a shot that deep."
The game was close but could have been won by a larger margin. It started off slow with only 12 combined points in the first four minutes. The pace soon picked up when the Peregrines took control of the game.
Junior guard Marcus Summers came off the bench, making an impact on both the defensive and offensive ends. Summers drained two 3-pointers in the blink of an eye, with eight of his 10 points coming in the first half.
The Peregrines stayed ahead and led by as many as seven during the half but could not distance themselves. PNC climbed back in the game and drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to pull to within a basket at halftime.
The Peregrines came out in the second half with a quick three from junior guard Steve Polak. Polak ended the game with 16 points, hitting four of six from the arc.
The Peregrine defense played tough in the opening minutes and the offense jumped out to a nine point lead at the beginning of the half. PNC got right back into the game, but never took the lead.
The Peregrines had trouble all night keeping apart from PNC and putting them away but took the game 81-77.
"It was mental lapses," said coach Fountain about his team's struggles.
PUC was able to reach an 11 point lead. The Peregrines made 15 of 19 free throws in the game, converting all 13 attempts in the second half.
