Finally on his sophomore album, Omarion finds a place in the music industry and really lets his musical expression come to life. "21" shows not only his adulthood initiating but his musical maturity reaching new grounds.
It's evident on this album of his journey slowly moving past the "sex-sells" persona - something many young artists use while breaking into mainstream music and media. Omarion digs deeper into finding new lyrics- going more explicit compared to his first album "O," released in 2005.
The step-worthy, smooth ballad "Entourage" marks Omarion's new style and flavor of
R & B mixes with lyrics reading "I don't need nobody else around see/ Love the way you compliment my style/ Though you may end up bein' my only girl/ Cause when your with me you're my whole world."
Enticing lyrics of "Icebox" and background vocals sing of past relationships affecting a new potential love. Upbeat tempos and Omarion's high vocals show his singing from his heart, giving his all energy in just one note.
The smoothest track on "21" has to be "Midnight," focusing on Omarion's slightly masculine voice instead of overpowering, repeated background vocals.
The only downside with this album is the tempos and beats- begging for some type of new instrument or sound to distinguish tracks on the album. ""Just Can't Let You Go" and "Entourage" sound too similar and give off the same energy-something that can't be repeated.
However, "Berg for it" comes out of nowhere.
Omarion gets credits for the lyrics on "Obsession" (the title tells the listener what to expect) but the beat revisits his past of "teen-pop" making listeners doubt his coming of a new age, and leaving behind his pop roots.
Each intro starts out unique, tricking a listener into believing they will hear something new. Only seconds into the track, they're surprised and greeted with a same, boring tempo.
This album is certainly borrow-worthy from a friend, to experience Omarion's new style for yourself.
