Hammond is not the place to be

Hammond In is not a typical college town and it is far from being an enjoyable place to live. PUC is in the middle of a dreary town.

I am a Hammond native, in a captured sense. I attended Gavit High School for 7 years, from 6 through 12 grades, before graduating in 2005. I myself live a minutes drive from the school. I did not know there was a college in Hammond until my senior year of high school.

Since I have received my license to drive, I have been trying to spend my time out of this town. I knew not of PUC's existence until I realized I would not be able to afford going to another school.

My inclination to escape this town can be understood by taking a stroll down Indianapolis Blvd on any given day. A person might notice a few gas stations, bars and maybe a couple of restaurants. What a person would not notice is any type of college atmosphere.

There has not been a single decent thing to do here for as long as I can remember. Why doesn't any one want to build a nice restaurant or movie theatre in this town?

There are students from different countries who only just experience Hammond in their time in the United States.

The university is here with 10,000 students and the next thing short of Highland or Munster is McDonald's, Arby's, and Papa John's Pizza. Maybe Carson Pirie Scott is a hopping good time for many of the people living in the area but I have to believe college students are reaching for a little more.

When I was 12 year old I had trouble finding things to keep myself occupied here, today it has not changed at all.
