The PUC women's basketball team (4-10, 0-1) traveled to Loyola University Saturday afternoon to compete against the Robert Morris Eagles (11-8, 2-0). It was an aggressive game from the tip off and the Lady Eagles took the win, 69-44.
"It didn't feel like a 25 point loss," said Head Coach Dennis Smith. "It felt like we were only a few lay-ups away."
A bad pass by the Lady Eagles within the first few minutes of the game gave senior center Jessica Hamman a chance for a fast-break and a lay-up to put PUC on the board. Hamman ended the night with 10 points, leading the Lady Peregrines.
PUC responded to the Lady Eagles every basket but were never able to take the lead.
The Lady Peregrines refused to fall more than three points behind on the scoreboard until the very last minute when a Robert Morris forward LaToya Jackson hit one from the corner to end the first half, 28-24.
PUC went into the locker room at halftime and came out 15 minutes later a different team, as Robert Morris took the court by storm and gained a quick 10 point lead.
"How about moving," said Smith during a timeout. "How about acting like you want to play."
The Lady Peregrines managed to come back to within four points after quick baskets from junior guard Krystal Rigoni and sophomore forward LaKeisha Hurst.
PUC stepped up on defense and a frustrated Robert Morris began losing control and handing over steals to the Lady Peregrines. But Robert Morris refused to give up and soon took a 14 point lead.
"We just had some bad shooting, but we played a good team that had speed," said Smith.
Robert Morris put forth an aggressive game that left PUC hitting the floor hard. Shots weren't falling for the Lady Peregrines, and they struggled to penetrate the lane against a tough defense.
The Lady Eagles took a 25 point lead, the largest of the afternoon, and finished 69-44.
"We need to play two full halves instead of just one good first half or just one good second half. That seems to be our problem,"
