NBA
The rash of big name injuries for the Miami Heat this season has not been limited to those on the court as Coach Pat Riley had his second surgery in two weeks Thursday. The Heat are expecting Shaq O'neal, Antoine Walker and James Posey back soon. Expect Miami to make a big push in the second half of the season.
The Hawks get Josh Smith back this week after he missed almost three weeks recovering from hernia surgery. He gives Atlanta a defensive presence in the paint, but don't expect him to improve this struggling team's record much.
Michigan Fab-Fiver Chris Webber agreed to terms with the Pistons last week, returning to his Detroit roots. C-Webb isn't what he used to be, but he can still make a good team better.
NFL
Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens had surgery Friday to repair a torn tendon in his right ring finger. Maybe he won't lead the league in drops next season.
Tony Gonzalez has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs that keeps him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. But at 31, is he really worth it?
Oakland Raiders Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan interviewed Friday for the team's head coaching job. The Raiders gave up the fewest passing yards in the NFL in 2006. It's a good move.
Cincinnati re-signed Robert Geathers Thursday after the defensive end finished the season with 10.5 sacks. If they bolster their defense this offseason, expect the Bengals to be serious contenders in 2007.
MLB
The Padres avoided arbitration with shortstop Khalil Greene on Friday, agreeing to a $2.25 million one-year contract. He might be the best young infielder in baseball.
Roger Clemens is choosing among returning to the Astros, retiring or rejoining the Yankees or Boston Red Sox, but he will be back.
The Colorado Rockies obtained right-hander Rodrigo Lopez from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for two minor leaguers. Lopez' ERA was 5.90 last year. What will it be in Denver's thin air?
The Cubs on Friday added some infield depth with the signing of Tomas Perez to a minor-league contract. How about adding some depth in the outfield, starting rotation and bullpen?
Japanese left-hander Kei Igawa signed with the Yankees last week. He's no Matsuzaka, but he has a nice change-up and will fit the back of the rotation well.
