In a close competition held at the Hammond Civic Center Tuesday night, the Lady Peregrines (4-10) defeated the Calumet College of St. Joseph Crimson Waves (3-15), 50-48.
"We played a great defensive game for 40 minutes," said PUC Head Coach Dennis Smith. "We started out slow at the beginning but still had the lead at halftime."
Things started badly for the Lady Peregrines as the Crimson Tide took an early nine point lead and held PUC scoreless for the first seven minutes. By halftime, PUC closed the gap and took the lead but Calumet College followed close behind.
The second half showed a different team, as PUC came out strong and took a quick six point lead. The Crimson Tide struggled to close the gap and with seven minutes left on the clock the score was tied and the two teams battled it out on the court until the end.
PUC reined victorious, 50-48, in a much needed win before their first conference game of the season against Robert Morris, Saturday.
"We played a lot better as a team," said junior forward Krystal Rigoni. "We didn't shoot well at first, but we came together in the second half."
