A sigh of relief echoed through the PUC crowd Tuesday night as the final buzzer ended and the Lady Peregrines 82-42 loss to St. Xavier came to a close.
"If we made a few of our other shots in the second half we could have gotten to within 10 points and at least scared them," said Head Coach Dennis Smith.
The Lady Peregrines (4-12, 0-2) got off to a good start and matched St. Xavier (17-2, 2-1) with a 3-pointer. Despite a great effort by PUC on defense, St. Xavier's speed and shooting gave them a quick 20 point lead.
As the Lady Peregrine offense crossed half-court, a tough Lady Cougar defense double-teamed and trapped them at the line, soon overwhelming PUC. The Lady Peregrines were held to only 15 points throughout the half.
The Lady Cougars, who are renowned as third in the nation, came out after halftime with a relaxed defense.
Although PUC began hitting their shots, which they seemed unable to do in the first half, they still couldn't seem to close the point gap in the second. St. Xavier took the win, 82-42.
"If you shoot 30 percent against a team who's third in the nation, that's just how it's going to end up," said Smith.
PUC shot 30 percent throughout the game and 81 percent from the charity stripe, while St. Xavier shot 48 percent overall and 81 percent from the line.
The Lady Peregrines will travel to IU Southbend Saturday for a 12 o'clock game.
