A task force will be formed to find and suggest solutions to the problems with PUC athletics, according to Vice Chancellor Melinda Dalgarn.
The decision comes on the heels of the cancellation of the men's basketball season after eight of 13 players were declared academically ineligible. Three Peregrines competed this fall who failed to meet academic eligibility standards.
The university has relied on the athletic director to monitor the classroom performance of student-athletes in the past, according to Chancellor Howard Cohen.
Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting employs a coordinator for compliance and academic achievement whose job it is to observe athletes academics.
"Purdue Calumet runs the intercollegiate athletics programs entirely out of student activities fees. We are very different from private universities in this regard. Perhaps with more funds we may have had a staff person to monitor student athlete classroom performance and a compliance officer," said Cohen. "This is, of course, speculation. We will see what the task force recommends for the future."
The task force will be comprised of faculty, staff, students and community representatives. Dalgarn said she is finalizing a list of individuals to be invited to join the committee this week.
A preliminary report from the task force is expected by mid-March.
The university expects to hire an interim men's basketball coach soon who can begin recruiting to fill next season's roster. PUC has already been contacted by parties interested in filling the seat left vacant after Head Coach Mike James's resignation and a national search to fill former Athletic Director Rob Jensen's position will begin soon.
Unused funds remaining in this year's men's basketball budget will be rolled over into next year's, Cohen said.
