During the first week of classes the Chronicle received an anonymous phone call. The female caller voiced concern for her safety on campus, in part because of the recent thefts on campus. She said she has been a student at PUC for the last year and is often on campus late in the evening. When walking on campus she said that she has never seen a campus police officer doing anything but "sitting on their butts." For many, this is an obvious safety concern.
In addition, she is worried about how the actions of "idiots" stealing computers will affect students. She probably spoke for the student body as a whole when she said she doesn't want to have to foot the bill for the thefts. She said she has not seen any officers policing the area of the thefts and wonders what the cameras are doing in that area if they aren't helping anyone. She repeatedly mentioned that she has rarely, if ever, seen the police doing any work.
Her general questions are "Am I safe on campus?" and "What are the campus police doing?"
By calling the Chronicle, she hoped to get her concerns out to the university as a whole. We wonder if the anonymous caller is voicing the concerns of the student body as a whole.
The Chronicle wants to know how safe students feel on campus. Do you feel like the university police are doing their jobs effectively?
Whether the answer is yes or no, we'd like to hear what you have to say.
If you have seen or experienced the campus police working hard to keep you or someone else safe, let us know. If your car broke down or you felt threatened by someone, were the police there to help you and you want to praise them?
Did the police ignore your concerns, not respond to you or have you seen them loafing around and you want to call them out on it?
Either way, let us know. It's important to the campus on a whole that the university police are working their hardest to ensure our safety. We hope that they are doing their best and if they aren't that needs to change before something much more serious than a theft occurs.
Just let us know your name, major and class. Faculty and staff are also welcome to respond. We will report our findings in an editorial at a later date, assuming we get enough responses.
