After losing a player at the end of the fall semester due to academic ineligibility, the Lady Peregrine roster stands at eight with the addition of sophomore guard Nicole Enright.
"I haven't played since my junior year of high school, so it felt great to be out there today," said Enright.
The Lady Peregrines (4-13, 0-3) traveled to IU South Bend (6-15, 2-2) Saturday morning in order to "go to war with the Lady Titans," according to the game announcer.
PUC lost both the battle and the war, 63-34.
"You could go out there with one eye closed and a patch over the other and still shoot better than 23 percent," said Head Coach Dennis Smith.
Although the Lady Peregrines only shot 23 percent throughout the game they managed to knock down 80 percent from the charity stripe, converting eight of the 10 attempts.
Going up strong to the basket, PUC was able to get the first points of the game along with a quick lead as sophomore forward LaKeisha Hurst hit two in a row. But with a few bad passes and fouls by PUC, the Lady Titans soon took over and gained points from the line.
Despite the Lady Peregrines tough defense and good hustle, IU South Bend led by as much as 17 points during the half.
"We need to take care of the ball better. We had a lot of good looks and openings but it just wasn't happening for us," said freshman forward Sara Keilman.
A new PUC team emerged after halftime and it looked as if the Lady Peregrines would have a good chance at a comeback. Junior guard/forward Linsey Smith hit two 3-pointers in a row to slowly begin closing the 34-17 point gap. Smith ended the game with seven points, the second highest scorer for PUC behind junior center Jessica Hamman's 11.
Forcing turnovers, sinking shots and a strong defense brought the Lady Peregrines within eight points of the lead, but the Lady Titans refused to make it easy. Sneaking inside the PUC defense, the Lady Titans were able to get shots off from the paint and extend their lead.
A frustrated PUC struggled to close the gap. After a few missed shots and a drop in confidence, turnovers and bad passes littered the last minutes of the game for the Lady Peregrines. IU South Bend finished it, winning by 29.
"We did well in the second half and actually doubled our score," said Coach Smith. "But after a few mess ups the girls began to get discouraged and hurried, and that's what hurt us."
