The San Diego Padres and pitcher David Wells reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $3 million. Wells is a workhorse and will provide experience for the Padres rotation.
Alfonso Soriano has volunteered to play centerfield for the Cubs. Manger Lou Pinella reportedly was intrigued by the idea. He's no gold glove, but he's more than the Cubs have had in the past.
Notre Dame WR Jeff Samardzija has chose baseball over the NFL. Samardzija signed a five year $10 million deal with the Cubs. Samardzija had a better chance of winning a Super Bowl with the Detroit Lions than he does a World Series with the Cubs.
OF Trot Nixon signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Indians. Nixon is a solid outfielder who will provide another left-hand bat in the lineup.
NFL
The Miami Dolphins have hired San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron as their new head coach; the fourth Dolphins coach in the last nine seasons. Cameron should be good for a talented Dolphins team.
The Cleveland Browns named Rob Chudzinski as their new offensive coordinator. Chudzinski will be no use unless the Browns get some offensive weapons.
The NFL has granted 40 players special eligibility for the 2007 draft. The players reached the three-year eligibility rule and have written a letter renouncing their remaining college eligibility. Over half of these players will probably never see an NFL field.
NBA
In Ron Artests return to Detroit last Saturday since the infamous brawl two years ago he was heckled and booed. Artest is booed wherever he goes, he has to be used to it by now.
The Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors completed an eight-player trade last week. Bigs names included Stephen Jackson and Michael Dunleavy. This is a good trade for both teams, but the Warriors got the better part with Jackson and Al Harrington.
The Denver Nuggets hired Rick Brunson as a player developmental coach. Brunson can look forward to dealing with Iverson throughout the season.
