Rich Boyle took home the intramural Hold 'Em championship Thursday night in the REC center.
The open-play tournament began with four players, but quickly boiled down to the eventual winner and Mike McCarthy.
Neither player wanted to be the aggressor as hand after hand went by with each refusing to bet after the blinds.
"You just have to wait for your opportunities or you'll get burned," said Boyle, a junior secondary education major.
Boyle is no stranger to poker tables. He stays out of the casinos, but said he plays often with friends and is no stranger to Hold 'Em tournaments. The Southern-Illinois native said he's won first prize in three previous tournaments and placed in 10.
McCarthy had the bigger stack for most of the night but Boyle slowly chipped away and on the final hand decided to make the first aggressive move of the evening.
"I thought to myself, 'I can win now or I can sit and wait,'" said Boyle.
Boyle went all in after the 10-7-3 flop holding a pair of sevens. McCarthy called with a pair of threes and a champion was crowned.
Both players were given PUC intramural T-shirts, but only Boyle holds the title of PUC's best card shark.
