Late into the second half aggression got the best of both teams when the ref had to step between PUC's Krystal Rigoni and IIT's Jackie Puschkar after a foul was called on the Lady Scarlet Hawks and the two were knocked to the floor.
Peregrine spirit could be seen both on the court and from the filled stands Saturday night as PUC hosted the Illinois Institute of Technology (5-18, 0-6). Amongst the homecoming activities, The Ladies Peregrines (5-15, 1-4) were able to pull off their first conference win of the season, 68-53.
"We definitely know how to make a game interesting. It goes to show you what focus and the ability to make good shots can do for us," said Head Coach Dennis Smith.
The Lady Peregrines showed their will to win from the very first basket. Wearing gold uniforms in memory of Coach Smith's father, which are only worn on special occasions, the team didn't disappoint.
As junior guard/forward Linsey Smith sunk two baskets in a row, the Lady Peregrines managed to grab hold of a strong lead.
Smith ended the night with 15 points and two rebounds, second in points behind senior center Jessica Hamman's 17 and four. Freshman forward Sara Keilman followed close behind with 14 points and five rebounds of her own.
The Lady Peregrines chemistry worked well both on offense and defense throughout the night, but PUC struggled to pull down rebounds.
"Are you actually rebounding or are you just hoping to get one," yelled Coach Smith from the sidelines.
The Lady Peregrines lead by 14 at the half, but the break was critical for PUC. The beginning of the second half resulted in a slower game and lost momentum by the Lady Peregrines. PUC struggled to break free of the tough IIT defense, and relaxed passes hurt them.
IIT broke to within seven points of the lead, but that's as close as they'd get.
With the last seconds winding down, PUC easily sent the ball down court for a lay-up by Hamman and received a standing ovation from the crowd as the buzzer sounded.
Although tired and red-faced, the Lady Peregrines managed to obtain their first win in the Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference, 68-53. The Lady Peregrines rest at sixth of seven places in the CCAC standings, ahead of IIT.
"We're improving, but we have to get more wins," said Coach Smith.
The Lady Peregrines will travel to Joliet on Tuesday to compete against the University of St. Francis, ranked third in the conference.
