Junior Adam Taylor paced in the hallway before the start of the tournament in preparation.
The evening opened with jokes and laughter for the other players as freshman Eric Kelleman removed his coat to reveal a "rock, paper, scissors champion" T-shirt.
"I thought the shirt would get to the opponents, mentally," said Kelleman.
Ten players participated in the double-elimination tournament. Each match was a best of five bout series and pairings were determined by a random draw.
Taylor defeated Kelleman in the first round but lost a rematch in the third. Kelleman went to the finals against Kevin Hoolehan, a freshman finance major.
Hoolehan had thought out his strategy before the tournament.
"You have to mix it up," said Hoolehan. "If you get predictable, you'll lose."
Kelleman's shirt did not affect Hoolehan's concentration.
"I was bean bags intramural champion and I've been practicing my rock, paper, scissors," said Hoolehan. "I was not intimidated by a shirt."
The championship came down to a final bout with the match tied 2-2. Hoolehan threw a rock and Kelleman scissors.
Hoolehan's arms rose in triumph and Kelleman's head sank in defeat, his shirt proven false.
Both players were given an intramural T-shirt for their efforts, but only Hoolehan can call himself intramural rock, paper, scissors champion.
