After grasping their first conference win last Saturday at homecoming, the Lady Peregrines hoped to add another win to their list Tuesday night against the University of St. Francis. But it wasn't in the cards for PUC (5-16, 1-5) as the Lady Fighting Saints (13-11, 4-2) defeated the lady Peregrines 82-57.
"If we would have beat them we'd be right behind them in the conference," said Head Coach Dennis Smith. "But tonight we kind of put ourselves in a hole."
Unable to run through the offense, PUC got off to a shaky start. PUC struggled to sink baskets throughout the first half, shooting only 25 percent compared to the Lady Fighting Saint's 55 percent.
Six minutes into the game the USF broke free from the Lady Peregrines, and although PUC fought to keep the score close the Lady Fighting Saints led by 25 at the half.
According to Coach Smith, the next big game will be Feb. 27 when PUC might be facing USF again in the first game of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference playoffs.
After the break PUC emerged with more energy but were unable to hold the Lady Fighting Saints to the outside.
The Lady Peregrines gave up lay-ups to the opposition but were able to hold USF to 36 points in the second half. PUC converted 12 of 31 field goals to bump their percentage up to 32 percent. But it wasn't enough to overcome the 82-57 point gap.
"That's what you get when you play for 20 minutes," said Coach Smith. "I thought there was a lot of improvement from the first half to the second half. The girls are capable but they have to slow down."
