College students and young professionals wondering how they are going to achieve what they want can find the answers through the new professional social networking website, YourSuccessNow.com (ysn.com).
Launched in early January by Young and Successful Media Corp., YSN is a media and educational company specializing in educational-entertainment tools to help young adults find success in the workforce. The website provides tools and resources for transitioning into the real world.
"It is interesting, with the growth of on-line communities, both personal and professional, that this site emerges as one with folks who are not only motivated by whatever it is they are doing or pursuing, but these same people are willing to share their insight, experience, and know-how," said Dan Harbeke, a YSN user who is a business manager at Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, NEB. "YSN.com is a wonderful destination, and starting point, for the ambitious among us."
Harbeke wrote the book 'Get In!: How to Market Yourself and Become Successful at a Young Age.'
YSN was founded by Jennifer Kushell and Scott M. Kaufman, authors of the book 'Secrets of the Young & Successful: How To Get Everything You Want Without Waiting a Lifetime.'
"We spoke to thousands of young people - from Harvard to the inner city - and found they ask the same questions," said Kushell in a Jan. 24 press release from PRNewswire.
"What will make me happy? What's out there? How can I pursue my dream? YSN.com helps uncover real answers and build a solid foundation for new lives and careers."
Once a person creates an YSN account, they can put together a portfolio explaining who they are professionally, what they have achieved and want to achieve. Users can send a question to someone in the industry about their interests. There is a question and answer feature and users can keep in touch with other YSN users in discussion forms or groups.
Another feature of YSN is self-assessment, where users take an assessment test offered in a flash-like situation to identify their personal and professional strengths. With a report and customized action plan users can choose if they want other members to view their portfolio.
Bob Cohen, assistant director of career services at Harvard University who serves as a mentor for YSN, said as a career development professional, he believes there is considerable value to this site.
"Just the assessment instrument, report and action plan alone would make this resource an invaluable jumping off point for anyone seeking some career direction. Combine that with direct access to a growing network of people committed to success on their own terms, as well as the groups and discussion forums, you could genuinely call YSN a one-stop-shopping opportunity to create and launch a successful career strategy," said Cohen.
