Peregrine Express should have been ADA compliant since fall

In the February 19 issue of The Chronicle reported that the Peregrine Express bus system will be adding a new ADA compliant bus at the end of February. While it's great that there will be a bus that is handicapped accessible, there should not have been a single day where there was not an ADA compliant bus.
A semester and a half have passed since the Peregrine Express was introduced.
The fact that the original bus is not ADA compliant is shameful. Even more shameful- a press release dated August 22, 2006 said "the bus is ADA compliant," when the bus is not wheelchair accessible. In addition, the current bus schedule says that the bus is ADA compliant.
We asked representatives of SGA and Hoosier ADAPT if the bus was ADA compliant and they said it was not.
While working on the story "Peregrine Express: Riders Wanted," we asked if the bus was ADA compliant. The answer was no. It's a horrible oversight by the university and it's shameful.
Look around campus. A lot of our fellow students could really use an ADA compliant bus to help them get around. Some live in the dorms and don't have cars. For others, it would just be a convenient way to catch a movie, grab some groceries or visit the Mansards. It's only fair that they have the same access to the bus as everyone else.
Not having an ADA compliant bus is part of the same issue of there not being ADA compliant bathrooms in the entire Gyte building. The building has been there since 1951. While it's true that no one can be responsible for an oversight that took place over 50 years ago, the change should have been made before now.
Currently, the university is working on eradicating both problems, which deserves a pat on the back. It's great to see the university doing their best to serve all students. But what about those students who needed the bus last year and have graduated already? Even more, what about the 50 years worth of students who had to go all over campus to find a restroom that they could use?
An even bigger issue is the press release and bus schedule claiming that the bus is ADA compliant. We hope PUC keeps this in mind as they continue to add to the campus.
