The new season of intramural volleyball is underway and several exciting match-ups took place Thursday night in the REC Center Gym.
This year features the largest spring turnout ever, according to sports coordinator Matt Dudzik
"We have a total of 13 teams. The last two spring seasons we have only had nine. We usually have a drop off from our fall season to our spring season," said Dudzik. "Part of the reason why we have so many teams is that we had more promoting, we got a lot of teams to come back. The sport is really growing."
Players also seem to be excited about the large turnout.
"It's pretty good to see more people playing. It's a fun game that a lot of people didn't get to play in high school. I'm looking forward to a good season," said Joe Borys, a senior majoring in fitness management.
One of the big games on the South court was a rematch from last semester's championship game, pitting defending champion Hawaiian Punch against runner-up A Taint Away. Hawaiian Punch, with several returning players from their championship team, won the first game 18-15. They weren't able to continue though and dropped the next two games 21-11 and 21-12.
This Won't Last Long defeated the Bumpin Bears by scores of 21-10, 21-11 and 21-9.
Alex Flores, a junior majoring in fitness management, plays for This Won't Last Long and is excited about the season.
"We are a force to be reckoned with. Our captains are dominant," said Flores.
Bad News Bears, who competed in last seasons North Division Championship, won an aggressive match over the FCC Eagles by scores of 21-12, 21-14 and 21-13. A player from each of the teams was ejected after rough play.
Other action saw Villains II defeat the Eagles 22-20, 21-15 and 21-17. Big Dogs lost against 2 Drink Minimum 21-17, 21-13 and 21-15.
After Puns took the first game 21-19. Bump, Set, Spike II followed by winning the second but came up short of a complete victory after dropping the third and final set 21-19.
The PUC Spikers had a bye-week, which hasn't been a factor in past years for volleyball.
Volleyball will continue over the next three months with finals taking place May 10.
