In the last home game of her basketball career senior center Jessica Hamman led the Lady Peregrines in rebounds with 13 and two assists. Hamman is ranked number three in overall rebounds within the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference individual standings.
PUC (6-23, 1-11) hosted the University of St. Francis Lady Saints (17-13, 8-4) Saturday afternoon in their last game of the regular season. The Lady Peregrines put up a tough fight but the Lady Saints overpowered PUC on the scoreboard, finishing 69-47.
"They (USF) average 80 points a game and we didn't want to get into a running game with them, and I don't think we did," said Head Coach Dennis Smith.
The Lady Peregrines came out strong and kept the lead close in the first half forcing USF to shoot from the perimeter. The Lady Saints took advantage and converted five of 11 3-pointers during the first half compared to PUC's two.
It was an aggressive and fast paced game at both ends, but bad passes and turnovers hurt the Lady Peregrines. PUC had a total of 26 turnovers at the end compared to USF's 16.
With the last few minutes of the half the Lady Saints broke away from PUC and led by 10 at halftime.
"We just missed a lot of easy shots that hurt us throughout the game," said Smith.
The Lady Saints dominated the boards in the second half despite PUC's good defensive attempt.
Offensively PUC was able to get good passes inside the paint but couldn't manage to find the basket. The Lady Peregrines were able to break to within nine points of the lead midway through the second half, but that's as close as they were able to get.
Although both teams became sloppy as the clock wound down, USF ended the game 69-47.
Junior guard Linsey Smith led in Lady Peregrine scoring with 12 points, while Hamman followed close behind with 11. Only five of the eight players managed to put point on the board for PUC.
The Lady Peregrines will play Tuesday night on the road in the CCAC quarterfinals, with the possibility of the championship on Saturday.
"I'll miss my teammates and the physical aspect of being down at the post position," said Hamman.
