Illinois Institute of Technology (6-23, 1-10) ranks seventh in the CCAC.
"When we compete at someone else's home we have to play smarter than them," said Head Coach Dennis Smith.
The Lady Peregrines came out strong with good defense against the Lady Hawks, but IIT continuously fought back. As the lady Hawks increased in aggressive play, PUC decreased in concentration.
"We have to learn to take advantage of what the opposition is doing," said Smith.
With 32 seconds remaining in the first half junior guard/forward Linsey Smith downed a 3-pointer for the Lady Peregrines, while sophomore Shannon Dugan added a basket at the buzzer to give PUC a 33-30 lead at halftime and their second lead of the night.
"Our girls didn't give up, but we need to put the ball in the basket," said Coach Smith.
The lead never reached more than four points and it was anybody's game in the second half.
Overall, the Lady Peregrines out-shot IIT both in field goals and from the stripe but the Lady Hawks took advantage of turnovers from PUC.
"We need to learn how to handle the ball better," said Smith. "Even though we shot 44 percent we had 16 turnovers in the first half alone."
Both teams became sloppy as the clock wound down. The two competitors hit the floor after every loose ball and scrapped for turnovers. It was a battle to the end and IIT came out on top, 60-56.
Smith led the team in scoring with 15 points, while senior center Jessica Hamman and sophomore forward LaKeisha Hurst followed close behind with 13 and 10 respectively.
