Chicken Scratch
Where's your hangout?
By: Katie Ramsey
Issue date: 3/5/07 Section: Entertainment
Zack and Kelly hung out at The Max. Ross and Rachel sipped coffee at the Central Perk. The 90210 gang gossiped at The Peach Pit. The kids on Degrassi drink sodas at The Dot.
And I hang out at The Steer in Highland.
Some believe few cafes, diners or restaurants left around the Region cater to certain fixes - coffee, burgers, whatever. And they like their service with a meaningful smile. Yet the quest for the near-perfect hangout usually ends up in a settlement for less. Maybe a reason someone flees to the drive-thru at McDonalds?
Most give up their search for a usual, weekly hangout for an enjoyable eat and the reason why rests upon the shoulders of the owners and staff. They fail at welcoming customers in a personal way.
Don't give up hope, just yet. Anyone can discover their favorite hangout, with open arms from owners and the staff -just how it's like in the shows, movies and even comics.
Archie and the gang loved their shakes at Pop Tate's Chok'lit Shoppe. Well, I love my cups of hot chocolate at The Steer.
It seems like every hangout employees a group of waitresses, waiters or owners catering to their loyal customers. Nat cooked those burgers to perfection while mentoring Brandon with weekly advice. Max allowed the Bayside gang host parties at his diner. Even Pop made sure Jughead ate like a king, keeping those hamburgers hot and ready.
Well what Max, Pop and Nat were to those groups of best friends-the gang of wonderfully nice ladies at The Steer are to me.
Chatty the waitress at The Steer never lets my cup of hot chocolate go cold. The hostess always knows I like a booth in the non-smoking section.
Sometimes it doesn't matter the quality of the establishment, who else dines there or if the food quality won five stars from the local paper's dining guide. It's just about the employees, the service and one good cup or plate of whatever.
Company of those around makes the establishment so warm, inviting and just like in the fictional world of shows, movies and comics.
It may take a little search and patience, but you can find just that. So thanks Chatty and the rest of the gang at The Steer. I'll see you guys later in the week.
