All you need to know about student organizations

For the majority of the student body, PUC is a place where the routine is to go to class and then leave immediately afterwards, be it for home or for work. However, PUC is also a place where students can enjoy activities and clubs celebrating a variety of topics in the form of student organizations.
According to Student Activities Assistant Carol Wolfe, there are currently 61 registered student organizations, with a total of 838 students and advisors involved in them.
One of these registered organizations is PUC's Chemistry & Physics Club, which, according to President Olga Garcia, has been around for over six years and seeks to organize events which revolve around chemistry and physics.
"Students should join the chemistry and physics club to share their ideas. As a member, the student is able to help with the coordination of events and suggest program/event ideas," Garcia said. "Students are encouraged to join so that they can have a voice. Without them, we wouldn't know what they need help with and/or what they want. It allows students to learn from upperclassmen and ask questions about their major and classes."
Another science-based organization is the Biology Club, which, according to President Jelena Kolundzic, has been active since fall 2009 and provides opportunities for students to get to know those who have an interest in biology. Kolundzic said the Biology Club also reaches out to the community with volunteering and community service work.
"Joining the Biology Club will help students develop networking and leadership skills that will be invaluable to their education and future," Kolundzic said. "Overall, being involved in a club and holding a leadership position will give you a competitive edge, especially if you are considering applying to professional schools such as medical or physical therapy schools."
For students who own a business or want to own or learn about one, there is PUC's Collegiate Entrepreneur's Organization.
"At meetings, we usually bring in entrepreneurs who have already established their businesses and are successful. They come in and share their experiences, including how they have started, the barriers they have encountered and how they were able to overcome those barriers," President Bernice Ameyedowo said. "Finally, our guests talk about where they are at this point in their business and where they see the organization heading."
Networking with peers and successful entrepreneurs and developing leadership skills are what students have to look forward to when joining CEO.
"At PUC's CEO, you will feel like you are part of a team and you will be making a difference in so many ways," Ameyedowo said.
For those who want to enrich their faith, the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is also an active organization this year.
"IVCF's purpose is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture and God's purposes in the world," said President Grace Gerhard. "To summarize, we are all about knowing Jesus and making Him known."
Gerhard said there are many ways students can get involved with the IVCF, such as large group meetings, small group bible studies, prayer meetings and conferences, and leadership training.
"What I like best about InterVarsity are the people who are a part of it. The community of students who are eager to learn more about Jesus and share His love with other people," Gerhard said. "I love seeing students grow and share their faith with others."
Wolfe said student organizations can be started at any time and that the Student Activities office is willing to help with the setup process.
"To start a new student organization, you need 3 current PUC students and a full time faculty/staff advisor," Wolfe said. "You will need to complete some forms, attend a short training conference on policies and procedures, and within 6 months submit a constitution."
There are brief descriptions of the student organizations on the Student Activities website and students may call the Student Activities office for more information about student organizations.
