Seniors take court for last time
Feb. 18 did not just mark the end of the season for PUC men's and women's basketball. For a few of the players, it was the end of the road for their time at PUC. Senior Day marked the final regular season games in the careers of Stephaine Beck of the women's team and Alex Richman of the men's.

PUC honors former athletes
On Feb. 18, while PUC was honoring its departing senior basketball players, the school also took time to honor its past. PUC inducted two new members into its hall of fame at halftime of the women's contest against Calumet Saint Joseph. This year's inductees were former women's basketball player Lynn Hevezi, and former men's player Tony Vermejan.

Intramural double-double
Preceding NBA All-Star weekend by nearly two weeks, PUC held its own basketball skills challenges on Feb. 14. But instead of featuring only the highest-paid ballers, PUC's contests gave the common student the chance to show off their shooting skills.

Intramural bowling gains popularity
The PUC intramural program has grown beyond the fitness center over the recent years, expanding the options for students. One intramural competition whose popularity has grown immensely is the bowling league held at Plaza Lanes in Highland. "We have 20 teams this year," said Intramural Sports Director Matt Dudzik.

Intramural soccer kicks off
Soccer, the sport of sports enjoyed throughout the world, will make its way to PUC next year. Fans of the beautiful game need not wait that long to see it played on campus, though. The PUC intramural soccer season is currently underway, with the first two weeks in the books.

Wins, milestone for women’s basketball
The final leg of the PUC women's basketball team's 2011-2012 season is off to a winning start. The women began a six-game stretch against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference teams on Jan. 25. In the first of the six, PUC beat Judson on the road 72-63.

Intramural basketball tips off
The PUC men's and women's basketball seasons are coming to a close, but for intramurals, basketball is just beginning. The popular intramural opened its 2012 season on Feb. 12. Despite the frigid cold outside, the Fitness Center gym was hot with competition.

Men’s takes thriller match at home
The PUC Fitness Center was packed on Feb. 11 to see the men's basketball team win a one-point thriller over conference opponent Trinity International. The first half of the game looked as if it was going to be a breeze for PUC. Their strong offense gave them the advantage as the team went into the break with a 43-28 lead.

PUC introduces soccer program, head coaches
Two additions to the PUC Athletics Department were announced during a Feb. 1 press conference, held at the Fitness Center. The event marked the unveiling women's soccer and return of men's to PUC. Athletic officials introduced Head Coaches Leslie Ferguson and James Drzewiecki, who will lead the two teams through the first season.

Air hockey champ notches 3-pete
What is for most players a simple arcade game has become a very popular and competitive intramural sport at PUC. The turnout for the annual air hockey tournament on Jan. 21 was markedly increased from recent years. The infamous snow storm of 2011 resulted in the rescheduling of last year's tournament which, according to intramural sports director Matt Dudzik, made it difficult for everyone who had originally signed up to make it.

Hammond fire department facing budge cuts
Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. has come under scrutiny for his decision to de-staff a city fire department ladder truck in order to balance the budget. The truck is one of four ladder trucks owned by the department. When fully staffed, each truck requires nine to 12 firefighters to take up the three, eight-hour operating shifts.

The new romantic drama "The Vow," starring Channing Tatum ("Dear John") and Rachel McAdams ("The Notebook") takes on the subject of amnesia as a stumbling block in a happy marriage. But, the result is a familiar, humdrum film, despite the fact that it is supposed to be "inspired" by actual events.
