      Although the university has cut funding for nearly every school and department, the athletic program continues to grow and thrive during these hard economic times. While all other departments are cutting spending and faculty, athletic director Rick Costello and his crew have been hiring new coaches and coming up with plans for new fields and equipment.

      PUC’s ever-growing athletic program just received a big boost from one of its most successful alums. Thomas Ray Crowel, Sr., has donated $25,000 to PUC athletics. This donation will establish an endowment to provide scholarships for PUC athletes. Crowel, a prominent local businessman, is perhaps most well-known for his insurance company Crowel Agency, Inc.

      The men’s golf team began their spring season on April 3 at the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational, and though their first tournament was a disappointment things have been looking up ever since. “The season started off better than expected. The team struggled in the first tournament, but the second was much better,” sophomore Charles Sawyer said.

      The men’s tennis team has gotten the season off to a fast start, already completing the first five matches on the schedule. The Peregrines began practicing over winter break at Match Point in Griffith. The team prepared by putting in two hours on the courts every Sunday during the break.
